SSAA Farmers Assist: Rifle Hunter
About our farm & Hunting Style
Our property suits chilled out rifle hunters that like to camp & walk slow & steady to hunt & enjoy the views and bush.
Key Reasons for this style of hunter:
• we are not doing a major cull of pests here. We are only monthly managing slowly and steadily the high numbers of kangaroos, small numbers of feral pigs, fox’s, feral cats, wild dogs.
•Kangaroos and pigs are very quiet & extremely easy to hunt. Will remain that way if use a quiet high-quality rifle supported with Quality optics to ensure precise shot placement (infrared & thermal equipment).
•Hunting strategic times are at twilight to sunrise, sunset and during night.
•We have a dirt road that run through both sides of property. We only want a quota of 10 kangaroos shot at each monthly hunting trip to meet National Parks & Wildlife cull quota we have
Due to such an easy short range shot from the road network, we only want kangaroos shot that hunters are willing to drag to side of our road network. All culls are picked up with our ute and disposed – reason is we operate a sheep & goat breeding grazing business and don’t want to attract any more than necessary predators such as crows, eagles, pigs and wild dogs, as we have enough as is.
Hunters Application
We only accept registered SSAA Farmer Assist Members with their 20 million public liability insurance up to date.
Please provide your details upon application first via SSAA Farmers Assist website with a short resume about yourself and that you are happy with this style of free hunting and free camping.

About Hunting Grounds
We only take a pre organised bookings of maximum once per month hunting (via a single hunter or group of three hunters)
We have a yearly permit from National Parks & Wildlife- we always have excessive numbers of kangaroos due to large areas of wooded mountain country neighbouring us which are mostly unoccupied and unmanaged, which wildlife migrate into our grassy woodland country at sunrise, sunset, during night.
Our goal is to proactively and monthly manage kangaroo numbers to an ecological sustainable number and control fox’s, feral pigs, cats & wild dogs. We only want a quota of 10 kangaroos shot at each hunting trip to meet National Parks & Wildlife kangaroo cull quota for this property.
Also good hunting nearby is Torrington State Conservation Park (1 million acres), but hunters have to pay a very low annual permit fee to National Parks & Wildlife
Camping
We have here for our hunters a good private and quiet free camp site with high set views to south and west over the Mole River valley – Heavily Wooded Mountain above camp site to north.
For those wanting a bit more luxury we have a neighbour that rents a very good quality rustic holiday style accommodation. We can help you discuss direct with this neighbour.
Rifle Noise & Neighbour Friendly & humane for cull animals
Couple of things that are important for this location is neighbour friendly with regards to noise pollution from rifles and adequate technology of your hunting equipment due to heavily timbered granite rock mountains surrounding us that echo noise through valley onto neighbours above on cliff tops.
Rifle’s that have been successful here are listed below that meet adequate noise pollution
Rifles & Calibres That Balance Lower Noise and Humane Outcomes on this hunting ground
Commonly Used, Code‑Compliant Options
(Lower Noise Profile)
✅ .223 Remington (Centrefire)
Widely used for kangaroo management.
Lower report than larger calibres.
Adequate lethality with correct ammunition.
Compatible with non‑braked barrels and longer barrel lengths, which reduce muzzle blast.
✅ Most practical balance of noise, legality, and humane effectiveness
✅ .222 Remington
Slightly quieter than .223.
Historically used in kangaroo control.
Meets humane standards when used appropriately.
✅ Good neighbour‑friendly option
⚠️ .22 Hornet
Noticeably quieter than .223.
Marginal energy for larger kangaroos.
Requires strict adherence to Code conditions to avoid welfare risk.
⚠️ Only suitable in limited, controlled circumstances
Subsonic Ammunition
Legal in NSW provided:
You hold a firearms licence for that calibre.
The ammunition is safe to fire in that firearm.
Subsonic ammo reduces the supersonic crack, leaving only muzzle blast. [police.nsw.gov.au], [www5.austlii.edu.au]
Important limitation:
Subsonic rounds have lower energy, which may not meet humane‑kill requirements for kangaroos unless paired with an appropriate calibre and close‑range conditions. The National Code warns against firearm/ammunition combinations that risk wounding
Rifle Configuration Recommendations (Legal & Effective)
Bolt‑action rifle (required by the Code).
No muzzle brake.
Longer barrel length (reduces blast).
Quality optics to ensure precise shot placement (Code requirement). [law.lclark.edu]
Rifles Not Recommended for our Neighbour Noise Friendly Valley
❌ Magnum calibres (.243, .270, .308)
Significantly louder.
Overpowered for routine kangaroo control near residences.
❌ Poor choice for noise reduction
